Hoarding Cleanup in Riverside County and the Temecula Valley

Fresh Start Hoarding Cleanup clears, sorts and deep cleans hoarded homes across Riverside County, from Temecula and Murrieta to Menifee, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Riverside, Corona and Moreno Valley. A local project manager visits the home, gives you a free and private estimate, and builds the plan with your family and the person who lives there. This is where Fresh Start began, so if you call from here, you are calling the team that knows these streets best.

A note from Abel

I'm Abel Dominguez. I've run Temecula Valley Junk Pick Up here for seven years, and this valley is home. With hoarded homes, the call often doesn't come from the person living in the house. It comes from a grown kid standing in the driveway, not sure where to start, and a little afraid of what the inside looks like now.

Here's what I'd tell you at your kitchen table. The junk is the easy part. The hard part is the conversation, the guilt, and the fear that someone is going to walk in and judge. So when we built Fresh Start, the rule was simple. Nobody on the crew judges, nobody rushes, and the person who lives there gets a say. That rule started here, in Riverside County.

You can read the bigger picture of what we do on our hoarding cleanup page.

What summer does to a full house

Inland Riverside County gets hot. Hemet, Menifee, Perris and Moreno Valley see long stretches over 100 degrees, and a closed-up house with no working air conditioning can get much hotter inside. Heat changes a hoarding situation in a few ways families don't always expect.

Odor gets stronger. Food waste, pet accidents and anything spoiled smell far worse at 95 degrees indoors. Neighbors notice, and sometimes that's how an HOA gets involved.

The air conditioner may be buried. The return vent or thermostat can end up behind boxes, or the unit quit years ago and never got fixed because nobody could reach it. If that's the case, we clear access first. The repair itself isn't our work, but your project manager can connect you with trusted local professionals.

The garage becomes an oven. In a lot of Temecula Valley tract homes, the garage filled up first, long before the house did. By August a packed garage can hold paint cans, aerosol sprays and old chemicals in heat they were never meant for. We pull those out carefully and set them aside for proper drop-off.

So in summer, we start early and do the heavy carrying in the cooler morning hours. Homes with pet or human waste, rodent droppings and heavy odor are normal work for us. We remove the soiled material, sanitize, and work on the smell until the home is livable again.

Tract homes, HOAs and 55-plus communities

Most of the valley is stucco tract housing from the 1980s on, with two-car garages and an HOA. That brings a few local realities.

  • HOA letters. In Temecula, Murrieta and Menifee, a violation notice about the garage, side yard or trash cans is often what finally pushes a family to act. Send a photo of the letter when you call. Your project manager will plan the first visible step around the HOA's deadline.
  • Dumpster rules. Many HOAs limit how long a dumpster can sit in a driveway. Some don't allow one on the street at all. We work within those rules and keep it low-key and private.
  • Older-adult communities. Sun City in Menifee and the many manufactured-home parks around Hemet and San Jacinto have a lot of residents in their 70s and 80s, often living alone. Smaller homes fill faster, and narrow park streets mean we use smaller trucks and more trips.
  • Rural lots. Out in French Valley, Wine Country, De Luz, Winchester or Aguanga, the clutter often spreads to sheds, trailers and the yard. Dry brush plus piles of stuff near a house is a fire worry in this county, so outdoor areas sometimes go first.

Who else can help in Riverside County

If your dad isn't eating, has fallen, or can't reach his bed or bathroom, that's called self-neglect, and you can report it.

Adult Protective Services. Riverside County Adult Protective Services, part of the Department of Public Social Services, takes reports 24 hours a day, every day, at (800) 491-7123. It serves adults 60 and older and dependent adults 18 to 59. You can find reporting details on the county's report abuse page. If someone is in danger right now, call 911 first. A report isn't a betrayal. A social worker can help with parts of life we don't handle, and we can help with the home.

Code enforcement. Which office handles a property depends on where it sits. Cities like Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee and Riverside have their own code enforcement staff. Temecula's office explains on its code enforcement page that unincorporated areas like French Valley, De Luz and Wine Country fall under Riverside County Code Enforcement instead. If an inspector has already been out, tell us what the notice says. Often the first goal is clear exits, a path through the house and garbage removed, which is a smaller step than clearing everything.

As far as we could find, Riverside County doesn't have a dedicated hoarding task force like some counties back east. Your project manager can help you keep APS, code enforcement and the cleanup lined up.

Hoarding disorder is a recognized condition in the DSM-5, and the International OCD Foundation estimates it affects about 2 to 6 percent of adults. If this is your own home and you're reading this quietly, start with our page for you.

Where everything goes

On day one, crews set up keep, donate and discard areas. Photos, mail, cash, jewelry, military papers and anything personal go into separate boxes for the family. Money turns up in purses and coat pockets. It all comes back to you.

Good furniture and household goods go to local thrift stores and charities, and we recycle metal, cardboard and electronics where we can.

The rest goes to a landfill or transfer station. The county's Department of Waste Resources lists its landfills and transfer stations, including Lamb Canyon in Beaumont, Badlands in Moreno Valley, and transfer stations in Perris, Moreno Valley and Riverside. El Sobrante, near Corona, is a large privately owned landfill that serves much of the region. Paint and chemicals from the garage go to the county's household hazardous waste program, not the trash. You never have to load a car.

Estates and Riverside Superior Court

When a parent has passed, someone usually needs legal authority before the house can be emptied or sold. In this county that runs through the Superior Court of California, County of Riverside. The court's probate page explains the process, and it has self-help resources for families handling an estate without a lawyer. We don't give legal advice. We work around the timeline your attorney or the court sets, and we set aside deeds, wills, titles, bank statements and tax papers as we find them. Our estate cleanout page explains more.

Towns and neighborhoods we cover

A local project manager covers western Riverside County and the Temecula Valley, including Temecula (Old Town, Paloma del Sol, Redhawk, Wolf Creek), Murrieta, French Valley, Wildomar, Menifee and Sun City, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Hemet, San Jacinto, Perris, Riverside, Corona, Norco, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Moreno Valley and Beaumont.

Cost and getting started

We don't publish prices, because every home is different. A one-bedroom condo with a crowded kitchen is a very different job from a four-bedroom house with a full garage and pet damage. Our cost page explains what moves the number. Financing is available.

If you're the one trying to figure out how to bring this up with your mom, read helping a family member first. Then call, or send photos. You don't need a plan before you reach out.

Common questions

Do you work in the summer heat?

Yes. We plan heavy work for early mornings, take breaks, and keep the house closed up when we can. Heat makes odor worse, so in summer we often clear the kitchen and any spoiled food first.

Our HOA sent a violation letter. Can you help us meet the deadline?

Usually, yes. Send us a photo of the letter. Your project manager will plan the first visible steps around that date, often the garage, driveway and side yards, and then move inside at a steadier pace.

Who do I call if my mom isn't safe living there?

Call Riverside County Adult Protective Services at (800) 491-7123, any time of day. They take reports about self-neglect for adults 60 and older and dependent adults. If she's in danger right now, call 911.

Will the neighbors find out?

We keep it low-key and private. Crews don't discuss the job outside, and we stage the work so the house doesn't become a show for the street. In a close neighborhood people may see a dumpster, but they won't hear details from us.

Do you handle a parent's house during probate?

Yes. We do estate and probate cleanouts across Riverside County and work around the timeline your attorney or Riverside Superior Court sets. Wills, titles, bank papers and photos get set aside for the family before anything leaves.

When you're ready, we're here.

Tell us a little about the home, or send a few photos. A local project manager will reach out, listen first, and give you a free, private estimate. No pressure and no judgment.
